Energy experts have issued a major warning to homeowners: the clock is ticking on the 0% VAT relief for solar and battery installations
The incentive, which has helped thousands across Scotland slash the cost of going green, is currently scheduled to come to a sharp end in March 2027. Experts are calling this the “VAT Cliff,” a moment where energy-saving upgrades could become significantly more expensive overnight.
Energy Heroes is urging households to “get their house in order” now to avoid a last-minute rush that could see them missing out on thousands in savings. A spokesperson said: “Make your property as efficient as you possibly can while the tax man is still helping you pay for it. It’s good for your pocket and essential for your long-term energy security.”
The ‘Tax No-Brainer
The current 0% VAT rate was a landmark change, but its looming expiration means a “panic reaction” in late 2026 might be too late. If the rate returns to the previous 5% or the standard 20%, a £10,000 installation could suddenly cost £12,000.
Experts say: “Don’t wait until the deadline is on your doorstep. If you are at the planning stage, try to pull your installation forward. That could save you a significant chunk of your total project cost before the tax window closes.”
Energy Heroes 6-Point ‘VAT Cliff’ Checklist:
Don’t wait for the rush
As March 2027 approaches, demand for installers will skyrocket. Booking your survey now ensures you are at the front of the queue for 2026, securing the 0% rate before the legislation changes.
Bundle your battery
Currently, batteries installed alongside solar or as a standalone retrofit benefit from the 0% VAT. If you’ve been thinking about storage, doing it now is an absolute no-brainer to avoid the 20% tax hit later.
Check your roof early
If your roof needs minor repairs before panels go up, doing it as part of an energy project can sometimes simplify your costs. Waiting until 2027 means every part of the job could be subject to higher tax.
Use the ‘Self-Generation’ challenge
Every watt you generate yourself is a watt you don’t pay 20% VAT on through your energy supplier. Generating your own power is the ultimate long-term tax dodge.
Be a ‘Incentive Detective’
Walk around your property and identify where you need the most power. Is it an EV charger? A heat pump? Doing these now under the 0% umbrella is a significant saving.
Don’t be afraid to act
The 0% VAT rate is a limited-time gift for energy independence. Taking the leap now means you won’t be one of the people left paying “tax on the sun” when the cliff edge arrives in March 2027.
